Shirdi Sai Baba

Sai Baba  (unknown – October 15, 1918), also known as Shirdi Sai Baba, was an Indian guru, yogi, and fakir who is regarded by his devotees as a saint. He was honored by both Muslim and Hindu devotees. During and well after his life on earth it remained uncertain as he was a Muslim or Hindu. This however was of no consequence to Sai Baba.  Sai Baba stressed upon the importance of surrender to the guidance of the true Sadguru or Murshad

Sai Baba is a very popular saint, not only in India, but is also worshiped by people around the world.  He had no love for consumable things and his sole concern was self-realization. He educated a moral code of love, forgiveness, helping others, charity, happiness, inner peace, and devotion to God and Guru. He gave no peculiarity  on religion or caste. Sai Baba’s teaching was a combination of  Hinduism and Islam. He gave the the Hindu name Dwarakamayi to the mosjjid  where he lived in, practiced Muslim rituals, educated using words and figures  from both traditions. He  was buried in Shirdi. One of his well known epigram was, “Sabka Malik Ek” (“One God for  all”).  He also said”Trust in me,  your prayer shall be answered“. He always expressed “Allah Malik” (“God is King”).

Shirdi Sai Baba

Sai Baba referred to several saints as ‘my brothers’, especially the disciples of Sri Swami Samartha of Akkalkot.

Sai Baba encouraged charity, and stressed the importance of sharing. He said: “Unless there is some relationship or correlation, nobody goes anywhere. If any men or creatures come to you, do not discourteously drive them away, but receive them well and treat them with due respect. Shri Hari (God) will certainly be pleased if you give water to the thirsty, bread to the hungry, clothes to the naked, and your  place  to strangers for sitting and resting.  If anybody wants any money from you and you are not of a mind to give, do not give, but do not shout at him like a dog. ” Other favorite sayings of his were “Why do you fear when I am here” and “He has no beginning… He has no end.”

Sai Baba prepared eleven assurances to his devotees:

  1. No destruction shall be happened, who steps on Shirdi.
  2. One who comes to my Samadhi, his sadness and suffering shall come to a close.
  3. Though I am no more in flesh and blood, I shall forever protect my devotees.
  4. Trust in me and your prayer shall be answered.
  5. Know that my spirit is never-ending, know this for yourself.
  6. Show unto me,  who has sought protection and has been turned away.
  7. In whatever faith people worship me, even so do I provide to them.
  8. Not in useless is my promise that I shall ever lighten your burden.
  9. Knock,  the door shall open, ask and it shall be granted.
  10. To him who surrenders to me totally,  I shall be ever indebted.
  11. I  blessed  who has become one with me.
